The booklet Onward Christian Soldiers explores the deep historical divisions within Christianity and critiques modern attempts to unify the church through institutional, political, or doctrinal compromise. It insists that authentic Christian unity cannot be forged through ecumenical councils or social-political movements, but must be grounded in loyalty to Jesus Christ and the authority of the Bible. Throughout the booklet, unity is portrayed not as denominational merger, but as spiritual alignment — rooted in truth, shaped by obedience, and led by the Spirit.

Origins of Division in Christianity

Christianity began as a powerful, Spirit-filled movement sparked by the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Early believers were unified in faith and purpose, even as they faced severe persecution. However, the landscape changed dramatically around 300 A.D., when the Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire. This church-state union introduced worldly power and political motives into the faith. With this fusion of spiritual and secular authority, corruption soon followed, and the purity of Christ’s original teachings was compromised.

Protestant Reformation and Further Fragmentation

In reaction to centuries of corruption, the Protestant Reformation arose, led by men like Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, and John Knox. They sought to return to the foundations of Scripture and challenge abuses within the Catholic Church. While the Reformation marked a courageous stand for truth, it also unleashed a cascade of further divisions. Doctrinal disagreements spawned countless denominations — now numbering over 800 — each claiming to represent biblical Christianity. Rather than restoring unity, the booklet argues, these movements exposed the danger of relying on human interpretation apart from the Spirit and Word of God.

Modern Attempts at Unity

In more recent centuries, attempts to unify Christianity have shifted toward social, political, and ecumenical efforts. During the Industrial Revolution, movements like the Social Gospel emphasized humanitarian reform and liberal theology, often sidelining doctrinal clarity for social activism. Organizations like the World Parliament of Religions (1893) and the National Council of Churches championed unity through shared values, social engagement, and institutional partnerships. However, the booklet critiques these ecumenical endeavors as superficial and spiritually hollow. By downplaying essential doctrinal differences, such movements achieve a counterfeit unity that, while organizationally impressive, lacks fidelity to Christ’s teachings.

Biblical Authority vs. Human Organization

The root cause of disunity, according to the booklet, lies in the abandonment of the Bible as the ultimate authority. When the Scriptures are no longer the guiding standard, human opinions and institutional traditions lead to doctrinal confusion and division. The only valid basis for unity is spiritual — a unity formed by shared commitment to Christ and obedience to the Word of God. The booklet warns against forming religious "confederacies," citing Isaiah 8:12: “Say ye not, A confederacy…” and encourages believers to reject man-made systems in favor of Spirit-led fellowship based on truth.

True Christian Unity and Mission

Jesus himself prayed in John 17:21 that his followers would “be one” — not through church mergers or synods, but through abiding in Him and His Word. The booklet affirms that genuine unity is possible only when believers are spiritually reborn, rooted in Scripture, and obedient to Christ. Verses like Acts 17:11 and 2 Timothy 2:15 are used to support the call for diligent Bible study and testing of all doctrines against God’s revealed truth. Unity comes from being "in Christ," not from being in the same institution.

God’s Kingdom vs. Man’s Kingdom

God’s Kingdom, the booklet insists, is spiritual in nature and cannot be built through legislation, councils, or political action. Human attempts to establish peace — whether through Communism, democracy, or ecumenical alliances — are ultimately doomed to fail. The promises of peace and justice will only be fulfilled when Christ returns to establish God’s righteous government. Earthly organizations that attempt to mimic God’s Kingdom inevitably fall short or become tools of deception. The booklet warns against trusting in worldly systems to bring about spiritual goals.

Prophecy and End-Time Warnings

Drawing from Revelation 13, the booklet presents a prophetic warning about false religious-political alliances in the last days. It describes two symbolic beasts: one with seven heads and ten horns, and another with lamb-like appearance but dragon-like voice. These represent corrupted religious and political powers that seek to control through deception and coercion. A future global alliance of compromised Christianity with secular authority is forecasted — a movement that will demand conformity and suppress biblical truth. This false unity will masquerade as Christian but oppose God’s true people and their faithfulness to Scripture.

The Hope of God’s One True Church

In contrast to the confusion and corruption of human systems, the booklet proclaims the hope of God’s One True Church. This is not a visible organization but a spiritual body composed of believers who keep Christ’s commandments, walk in truth, and follow the Lamb wherever he leads. This Church — described in Ephesians 4:3–6 — is the Bride of Christ, unified by faith and obedience rather than by institutions or creeds. The call is clear: come out of false religious systems and be part of the true body of Christ, which will be revealed fully in God’s Kingdom.

Final Appeal: “Onward, Christian Soldiers”

The booklet ends with a rousing appeal for courage and steadfastness. Believers are called to stand firm against error, to unite with others based on Scripture, and to persevere in the spiritual battle for truth. The hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers” is included as a powerful reminder of the unwavering mission of faithful Christians throughout history — to march forward, not with compromise, but with conviction, proclaiming the truth of God’s Word and preparing for the soon-coming Kingdom.
