Description
The Apostle Peter was the first to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, sent of God. He was the only one of the twelve to draw a sword to defend his Master when he was about to be arrested. He was also the one who soon after swore and denied even knowing Jesus. But despite his weaknesses Peter's heart was loyal to God and to his beloved son. What made this man of God so saintly was not that he never made a mistake or was above other men, but that he was a humble servant. His weaknesses were offset by the abundant evidence of devotion and heart loyalty. His very experience in stumbling and recovery have touched many hearts that are likewise devoted to God but have experienced sin and weakness.
Jesus once asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter's instant response was, "You are the Christ, the son of the living God." Jesus replied that upon that truth he would build his church and would give Peter "the keys of the kingdom of heaven." Peter's ministry then went on to open the door to heaven by sharing the foundation truth of Jesus as the son of God.
