Freedom, justice, and equality are among the ideals that have shaped the modern world. Yet the Bible points to a time when these ideals will become far more than aspirations—they will become a reality for all humanity.
America’s history provides an intriguing starting point. Those who fled religious persecution in Europe sought a land where they could worship according to conscience and live free from the authority of kings and religious rulers. The principles of liberty, personal rights, and separation of church and state that emerged from this experience were deeply influenced by biblical teachings.
Centuries earlier, God had given Israel a remarkable system designed to promote liberty, justice, and human dignity. Every fiftieth year, the Jubilee brought freedom to servants, cancellation of debts, and restoration of family lands. It prevented poverty and hardship from becoming permanent conditions and demonstrated God’s concern for the welfare of every individual.
Could this ancient system point to something much greater? The Bible speaks of a coming “restitution of all things”—a worldwide restoration under the righteous rule of Christ. In our own time, remarkable advances in health, agriculture, literacy, technology, and individual liberty have transformed human life. These developments may provide glimpses of humanity being prepared for a much greater transformation.
But today’s progress is only a beginning. Under Christ’s Kingdom, the principles represented by the Jubilee will extend to every person. Justice, peace, health, and human dignity will no longer be limited by poverty, oppression, or human imperfection. Even death itself will be overcome as loved ones are restored to life. The ancient Jubilee points forward to a magnificent promise: liberty, justice, and lasting happiness for all humanity under the righteous government of Christ.
