Preface

In 2018, the Polish brethren published a book containing a translation of Br. Carl Hagensick’s writings and discourses. In 2025, brethren from his home ecclesia desired to publish the same material in English. We gratefully acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our Polish brethren in translating and producing the Polish version and their willingness to share it now to be printed in English.

Contained here are a selection of writings by Br. Carl A. Hagensick, a beloved elder with the Chicago Bible Students ecclesia for many years. The bulk of the articles contained herein first appeared in The Herald of Christ’s Kingdom magazine and the Beauties of the Truth publication. Several articles were also transcribed from audio files and edited into a printable format. Additionally, two entries, not contained in the Polish version, are included here and are taken from two discourses titled The Sin Offering and The Three R’s of the Kingdom. Four additional articles from the Herald of Chirst’s Kingdom have also been added: The Grace Wherein We Stand; The Memorial Supper; Keeping the Faith; and Forsaken, But Not Abandoned. Keeping the Faith was printed in 2009 after his death. Two Aspects of Justification was the last discourse he wrote. It was delivered after his death by a Chicago elder and is considered by some to be one of his most important works, along with Blessed are the Peacemakers.

One of Carl’s enduring legacies was the manner in which he dealt with the spinal stroke he suffered in 1991. It confined him to a wheelchair for the remaining 16 years of his life. Some would have been devastated by this traumatic lifestyle change, but Carl accepted it as providential and faced the challenge with courage. Despite the pain his crippled body endured, he continued serving with fervency and delight. The experience brought him closer to the Lord and the brethren, and he found innovative ways to continue his travels and speaking engagements.

Considering that Carl himself was in the printing business, it seems especially fitting to publish his works. He was an influence known worldwide to many, both young and old, and was instrumental in leading youth groups and helping initiate the first Bible Students International Convention in 1982. Since his death in 2008, his discourses and writings remain a powerful source of inspiration and truth.

We share the material within these pages not only for its uplifting value but also because, through his writing, we get a brief glimpse of the new creature we have come to love. We honor him as he honored the Lord.
